Joao Fonseca draws Roger Federer comp after French Open stunner vs. Novak Djokovic

Roger Federer did not win his first of 20 grand slams until the 2003 Wimbledon Championships, but he made a thunderous statement to the tennis-watching public two years earlier. One could call it a harbinger of the Swiss man’s future legendary status. Joao Fonseca is hoping he just achieved a similar feat at the 2026 French Open. The Brazilian teenager and No. 28 seed stunned the greatest of all time on Friday.

Fonseca overcame a seemingly insurmountable deficit on Philippe-Chatrier and outlasted a 39-year-old Novak Djokovic (4-6, 4-6, 6-3, 7-5, 7-5) in front of a completely captivated crowd. He advances to the second week of a major for the first time in his career, and does so by coming back to beat the gold standard of the sport. One cannot help but notice the comparisons between this breakthrough and the one Federer seized on grass almost a quarter century ago.

2001 Wimbledon: 19-year-old Roger Federer defeats Pete Sampras, his idol and the GOAT, 7-5 in the fifth set,” tennis author Bastien Fachan posted on X.  “2026 Roland-Garros: 19-year-old Joao Fonseca defeats Novak Djokovic, his idol and the GOAT, 7-5 in the fifth set.”

It is obviously far too early to forecast a Federer-like career for Fonseca, but fans have been predicting this young athlete’s ascension for a bit now. Despite an impressive showing at Indian Wells — beat Karen Khachanov and Tommy Paul and pushed Jannik Sinner to two tie breakers — he has experienced plenty of turbulence in 2026. Perhaps this clay-court coup will serve as a turning point.

Fonseca may have to wait a while before fully capitalizing on this moment, however. He has now climbed out of 0-2 holes in consecutive matches, with the second one coming against the epitome of durability in Djokovic. He will need to quickly reload his tank to have a realistic shot at beating two-time French Open finalist Casper Ruud in the fourth round.

Though, considering that the 27-year-old Norwegian had to pull off a grueling 0-2 comeback in his own right (beat Tommy Paul 4-6, 6-7, 6-4, 7-6, 7-5), the tennis gods may be looking favorably on Joao Fonseca. With no grand slam champions left in the field, who says this man has to wait before experiencing a full bloom?
