JB Bickerstaff sums up Pistons’ success after first 60-win season in 20 years

The Detroit Pistons have concluded their historic regular-season turnaround. Their 133-121 victory over the Indiana Pacers cemented a 60-22 record to help validate their first-place spot in the Eastern Conference. Detroit will enter the postseason with home-court advantage throughout its matchups against the East.

This marks the first time in 20 years that the Pistons have won 60 games in a regular season. They have achieved this win total three different times in franchise history. No team in NBA history has, in two years, lost 60 games and then won 60 games. Pistons’ head coach J.B. Bickerstaff regularly stays humble and reserved when reflecting on the accomplishments of his team during the season. However, he took a brief moment after their season finale victory to shine light on what helped them get to this point.

“It’s a sign of the work that’s been done by everybody who’s a part of this. Front office, coaching staff, players, medical staff, everybody who has touched these guys and helped them with that consistency and that effort. It’s a group thing,” Bickerstaff explained. “Everybody who’s been a part of it should be celebrated. But again, our work’s not done, and that’s the mentality that we have. But there is an appreciation and respect for all the work that everybody’s put in to help us get here.”

The Pistons finished their season with a three-game winning streak. Those final games were not just used to add victories, but to gel returning pieces coming back to the rotation. All-Star point guard Cade Cunningham came back into the starting lineup after missing several weeks due to a collapsed lung. Forward Isaiah Stewart also made his much-anticipated return after missing time for a left calf strain. Both players fit right back in with the team and made a significant impact in the three victories for the Pistons.

Detroit finished last season as one of the NBA’s surprise breakout teams. They finished with a 44-38 record and pushed the New York Knicks to the brink in a six-game first-round series. New York advanced in that series, but the Pistons’ future promise was evident in that matchup.

The Pistons proved they can overcome the adversity of the regular season and live up to the hype of heightened expectations. Trying moments like playing through injuries, suspensions, and lineup changes tested their will and they managed to still find success. The regular season progress holds special weight but the Pistons have not been shy about their anticipation for their upcoming postseason run.

“It’s no different than last year besides we have more experience. We have a better team and a better feel for our system. And we have a chip on our shoulder a little more than last year,” Cunningham stated. “We’re excited for the city to bring playoff basketball back, and we can’t wait.”

The Pistons’ first playoff game is this Sunday at 6:30 P.M. at Little Caesars Arena. Their first-round opponent will be decided once the NBA Play-In Tournament finishes. The playoffs in the Eastern Conference will start with the Charlotte Hornets taking on the Miami Heat and the Philadelphia 76ers taking on the Orlando Magic.
