Jay Wright reveals Mike Brown exchange after Knicks’ NBA Finals win

The New York Knicks are still in the early stages of their celebration after winning the 2026 NBA championship over the San Antonio Spurs in five games. The Knicks recently returned to New York City, where they will take part in a parade through the streets of Manhattan on Thursday.

Recently, former Villanova basketball head coach Jay Wright, who coached Knicks starters Jalen Brunson, Mikal Bridges, and Josh Hart in college, revealed an exchange he had with Knicks head coach Mike Brown after the title win.

Mike texted me after the game, ‘Your guys made it real easy on me,’” Wright said, per Stephanie Ruhle of MSNBC, via Adam Zagoria of NJ.com. “I texted him back and said, ‘There is nothing easy about your job.’ It’s true, To coach in the NBA you’ve gotta have a lot of courage, you’ve gotta have a lot of self-confidence and I think Mike did so many things during the season that developed that team mentally, developed depth in that team and then. Even in the playoffs he made a lot of subtle moves that an outsider would not see.”

Brown did not always have the favor of Knicks fans, even during these playoffs, when many questioned his lineup rotations after the team fell down 2-1 to the Atlanta Hawks in the first round. However, after that point, the Knicks went 15-1 for the rest of the postseason, with their one blemish coming in Game 3 against the Spurs.

New York now sits as NBA champions for the first time in over five decades, and the championship habits that Hart, Brunson, and Bridges built at Villanova under Wright were clearly a big reason why.

In any case, the Knicks’ championship parade is set for Thursday.
