Jay Williams spouts fake news about Jaylen Brown unfollowing Celtics accounts on social media

The Boston Celtics are currently embroiled in trade rumors, most of which surround star wing Jaylen Brown and Milwaukee Bucks former league MVP Giannis Antetokounmpo. The Celtics have some pressure on them this offseason to keep pace after the New York Knicks’ recent dominant NBA championship run.

As the rumors swirl, fans are looking for any hints from the teams or players themselves about what might be to come, and recently, former college basketball star and current ESPN analyst Jay Williams took to “Get Up” to make a bold report about a supposed development regarding Brown.

“Jaylen Brown has already also unfollowed the Boston Celtics on all his social media. So there’s a lot of stuff going on, guys,” said Williams, per Billy Heyen of The Sporting News.

However, a quick search reveals that Brown is indeed still following the Celtics on both X (formerly Twitter) and Instagram, rendering Williams’ report completely false.

Some have speculated that Williams’ false report may have stemmed from a highly misleading X post from Jesse Morse insinuating that Brown had recently scrubbed the Celtics’ iconography from his banners on the social media platforms, when in reality, it hasn’t been there for several years.

Whatever the real reason for the mishap, it’s certainly important for people like Williams and others with large platforms to get their facts in order before taking the air, especially in today’s highly susceptible disinformation age.

Still, there certainly does seem to be quite a bit of smoke currently around Brown and the Celtics following their 3-1 collapse in the first round of the playoffs against the Philadelphia 76ers, and it remains to be seen if Brad Stevens will opt to pull the plug and make a truly drastic move this offseason regarding the 2024 NBA Finals MVP.
