Isaiah Thomas laments Spurs’ fatal Chris Paul mistake that cost them NBA Finals

Former All-Star Isaiah Thomas explained why he believes the San Antonio Spurs made a crucial mistake in letting veteran Chris Paul walk during free agency last season. Paul shared a special moment with the Spurs during the NBA Cup final. Almost like a proud dad watching his kids take a significant leap in their growth, one that led to them reaching the NBA Finals.

For Thomas, the guidance Paul shown could have extended to one more season, and possibly, a different outcome in the Spurs’ 4-1 Finals loss to the New York Knicks, he said, per the Point Game podcast.

“I believe if they had Chris Paul on this roster, they would’ve won the finals,” Thomas said. “And not even saying Chris Paul to get out there and play. He doesn’t even have to get vauable minutes, but his experience, and who he, his Hall of Fame career, would’ve helped De’Aaron Fox. Would have helped Castle, would have helped Harper.

“It would have slowed that whole team’s mind down in those situations where it’s time to exectue; we need a basket, we need a good shot. So, that is something that I think they need — a veteran point guard that can still play at a high level. But opportunity, maybe he doesn’t play, but he’s been in these situations. He understands it,” Thomas concluded.

It’ll be interesting to see how the Spurs approach the offseason after losing the Finals. While the Knicks also lacked experience in the NBA Finals, many believe that for All-Star Victor Wembanyama, and most of the Spurs players, amidst the first playoff appearance of their career, the Spurs’ lack of playoff experience showed most against New York.

When the pressure was at its highest, Isaiah Thomas believes the Spurs could have benefited from having Chris Paul as a valuable resource.
