Is Giannis’ brother, Thanasis, still with Bucks after massive trade?

On Monday night, the Milwaukee Bucks finally ended the Giannis Antetokounmpo trade saga. They agreed to a deal with the Miami Heat on the eve of the 2026 NBA Draft, sending Antetokounmpo (and Bobby Portis) to South Beach for a hefty package that includes Tyler Herro, Kel’el Ware, Jaime Jaquez Jr., Kasparas Jakucionis, three future firsts (2026, 2031, and 2033), a pick swap (2030), and a second-round pick (2033).

Antetokounmpo’s departure from the Bucks had been a long time coming, with the Greek Freak having wasted no opportunity to express his discontent regarding his situation in Milwaukee. It remains to be seen if the Heat will emerge as a legitimate contender with the two-time MVP in town, but this is a great starting-off point as Miami tries to return to contention.

But with Antetokounmpo now headed to Miami, some may be wondering what this means for his brother, Thanasis, and whether he’d be on his way to Miami as well. For now, Thanasis remains on the Bucks organization, but as a cap hit, as he is now a free agent, after the expiry of the one-year deal with Milwaukee this past campaign.

The Antetokounmpo brothers have been a package deal for a while now; Thanasis has been a part of the Bucks’ roster for six of the past seven seasons, with the only exception being the 2024-25 campaign, when he was out due to injury.

Some think that the Bucks have been simply doing Giannis a favor by giving Thanasis a guaranteed roster spot, and it’s unclear whether or not the Heat will be giving him the same privilege.

Milwaukee even doubled down this past season, calling up Alex Antetokounmpo to the NBA with their playoff hopes having been shredded to dust.

Considering how the Giannis trade essentially gutted Miami’s depth, there could very well be an open roster spot for Thanasis in South Beach.
