The Delhi Capitals defeated the Mumbai Indians by six wickets in Match 8 of the 2026 Indian Premier League at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in Delhi to register their second consecutive win of the season.

Asked to bat first, MI posted a competitive total of 162/6 in their 20 overs, with Suryakumar Yadav leading the charge with a 51-run knock, while Rohit Sharma chipped in with a steady 35 at the top. However, DC’s bowlers kept things under control, with Mukesh Kumar being the standout performer, picking up two crucial wickets to restrict the visitors.

In response, DC had a shaky start as their top order struggled to build momentum early on. However, impact substitute Sameer Rizvi turned the game on its head with a sensational knock, guiding the chase with a breathtaking knock of 90 off 51 balls. Apart from him, Pathum Nissanka contributed with a valuable 44.

After Rizvi’s dismissal, David Miller ensured there were no further hiccups, guiding DC to 166/4 in 18.1 overs and sealing a comfortable six-wicket victory. Rizvi was named the Player of the Match.

Talking Points

1) Rohit Sharma continues fine form

After being invited to bat first, Mumbai Indians' opener Rohit Sharma continued his fine form in the IPL 2026 with a handy 35 off 2 on what seemed like a tricky wicket.

Suryakumar Yadav, too, played a fine knock, after being named as a captain for this game in Hardik Pandya's absence. The stand-in MI captain scored 51 runs in just 36 balls, and gave his side a good platform before the finishing overs.

2) DC's all-round bowling performace

It was a complete bowling performance by the DC bowlers in their first home fixture in the IPL 2026. Mukesh Kumar gave them a strong start with the new ball, claiming the wickets of Ryan Rickelton and Tilak Varma. His spell put MI's batters under immense pressure.

The momentum was carried on nicely by other DC bowlers. Captain Axar Patel, too, bowled an economical spell of 1/22 in his four overs.

3) Sameer Rizvi's dream run continues

Chasing a tricky total of 163, Delhi Capitals needed a spirited performace from their batters, and the batter delivered. Pathum Nissanka gave them a good start, scoring 44 runs in 30 balls, but this chase was all about Sameer Rizvi's brilliance with the bat.

The right-hander had a stellar outing as he scored 90 runs in just 51 balls, taking his side over the line with ease. This was his third consecutive fifty-plus score in IPL.

Who said what?

Axar Patel, DC captain

"In T20 cricket, it's all about the flexibility. If you have players who can play anywhere, it's good. We are open-minded. If the wicket suits any player, we send them. [On selecting Sameer ahead of Ashutosh as Impact Player] When you practice together, you get to know players. Ashutosh is batting really well. But it's a good thing if this is the problem I'm facing to select players. [What's the secret behind the wins?] It's important to take one game at a time. If you are winning, it's important to carry forward the momentum. IPL is a long tournament and it's important to carry forward the winning momentum. We will make sure that we don't repeat the mistake we committed last year."

Suryakumar Yadav, MI captain

"I think it was a decent wicket. We expected it to be a little on the slower side, but still from batting point of view we were a little short of 15-20 runs, but I don't want to take any credit away from the bowlers and also their batters batted really well in the second innings. (on Rizvi) Absolutely, I mean at 7 for 2 someone coming in like that and batting like the way he batted, I think a lot of credit goes to him. He never let us come into the game. We tried our best to follow all the things what was there in the bowling department, but we couldn't come back. You just keep batting, understand the stats, what's good, what has been good here, but we felt 180-185 was a good score. We felt short by 15-20 runs. I think me and Naman, we both got out at the wrong time, otherwise we would have at least got above par. I mean absolutely, see, there'll be days like this when you try and it won't work, but we will go back to drawing board, work hard and come back in the next few days."

Sameer Rizvi, Player of the Match

“I have worked really hard on my weaknesses. I used to have some problems against fast bowlers, but I worked on it in the last year and now I am reaping the fruits. (Mindset coming in to bat?) I try to play according to the situation. I took some time in both the innings I have played. I tried to watch the ball till the end. And it paid off. When you take some time, things become easier for you. (How important is the IPL?) It is an important time for any player, because if you do well here, you can get more opportunities. So, I'll try to continue the good work.”
