Insider dumps cold water on Odell Beckham Jr. optimism

As head coach John Harbaugh builds out his vision of the New York Giant, a reunion with wide receiver Odell Beckham Jr. has been rumored. However, it may end up being just a pipe dream after all.

Beckham has ties to both Harbaugh from his time on the Baltimore Ravens, and the Giants, as they’re the team that drafted. But based on how things currently stand, Albert Breer of Sports Illustrated doesn’t see OBJ making a strong impact even if signed.

“The Giants’ tire-kicking on Odell Beckham Jr. is fun, so long as you can keep proper perspective on what this is. Beckham is one of these guys that I believe fans see as forever young, maybe mostly because of his spirit, the potential he once had and the style of play that looked a little different back when he was young compared to anything we’d ever seen,” Breer wrote. “No one should confuse that with Beckham actually being some sort of prospect.”

“So do I think this can be a really cool story of a guy who just wants to play football again? I do. And I’m all for it becoming that,” Breer wrote. “But let’s not turn it into something it’s not.”

First and foremost, the Giants need to actually sign Beckham before any speculation goes further. But if they do, it’ll be the wide receiver’s 11th season in the league. He hasn’t played since 2024, where he caught just nine passes for 55 yards. Which such a long layoff, it is fair to wonder what OBJ can off over a full season.

But if Harbaugh and the Giants end up signing the wide receiver, it’ll be clear they still see something in him. As for Breer, he’ll wait until Beckham is back on the gridiron before issuing a final opinion.
