Hurricanes’ Shayne Gostisbehere already looking to Stanley Cup Final after Game 4 win

The Carolina Hurricanes beat the Montreal Canadiens 4-0 in Game 4 of the Eastern Conference Final. They are one win away from their first Stanley Cup Final appearance since 2006. While they still have one win to go, Hurricanes defenseman Shayne Gostisbehere has his eyes on the Stanley Cup.

“I’m definitely excited, for sure, having the success we’re having,” Gostisbehere said, per NHL.com’s Sean Farrell. “And it’s hard not to look past it but we have to take care of business. It’s a businesslike approach for us to finish this off if we can and the fourth one is the hardest, so just more of the same from us.”

The Canadiens came out and threw the first punch in the Eastern Conference Final, winning Game 1 6-2 thanks to a four-goal first period. Ever since then, the Hurricanes have been dominant. They won 3-2 in overtime in both Games 2 and 3 and then blew out Montreal at the Bell Centre on Wednesday.

It is highly unlikely that the Hurricanes will lose the final three games of this series and collapse. But the Rod Brind’Amour era has been defined by disappointing finishes in the Eastern Conference Final. Prior to this year, they made three appearances and had won a combined one game. The players may be confident, but the fans probably have to see it before they believe it.

Gostisbehere is in his 12th NHL season with his fourth different franchise, but he has never made the Stanley Cup Final. His only three deep playoff runs have come as a member of the Hurricanes, so he knows the East Final pain. Gostisbehere scored a massive goal in Game 3 and picked up two assists in Game 4.

The Hurricanes will look to close out the Canadiens in Game 5 on Friday night in Raleigh. If they win, they will face the Vegas Golden Knights in the Stanley Cup Final.
