Hurricanes’ Rod Brind’Amour drops tough ‘you’ll see’ Game 4 goalie declaration

The Carolina Hurricanes are down 2-1 in the Stanley Cup Final against the Vegas Golden Knights. Carolina pulled off a ferocious comeback in Game 3, forcing overtime from down 4-0, partly thanks to a goalie change. But Vegas won the game, so a permanent goalie change could be coming. Hurricanes coach Rod Brind’Amour won’t reveal whether Brendan Bussi or Frederik Andersen is playing Game 4.

“Rod Brind’Amour still isn’t revealing his starting goalie for tonight’s game. Asked if he’s making a change: ‘You’ll see,'” Chris Johnston of The Athletic reported.

Andersen has started every game of the Stanley Cup Playoffs to an incredible 13-2 record. But when the Golden Knights went up 4-0 in a vital Game 3, Brind’Amour had to make a change. Bussi was incredible, saving 18 of 19 shots in 45 minutes of game time to keep Carolina in the game. The Hurricanes lost, but the rookie may be getting a shot.

Bussi came out of nowhere to be a goaltending star for the Hurricanes this season. He was a waiver claim from the Boston Bruins, tabbed for a run in the AHL. But an injury to Pyotr Kochetkov put the Long Island native at the forefront, starting 39 games in the regular season. The Hurricanes won 31 of his 39 starts.

If Andersen starts, it will be Brind’Amour going with the goalie that got the Hurricanes to the Stanley Cup Final. Andersen has a 1.89 goals-against average in the postseason as he looks to conquer his playoff demons. He was brutal to start Game 3, and it may cost him a chance to play in the next Stanley Cup Final game.

In the other net, the Golden Knights are expected to stay with Carter Hart. He battled back from allowing four goals in the third period to stone the Hurricanes in overtime and clinch the victory.

Game 4 of the Stanley Cup Final begins at 8 p.m. Eastern on Tuesday.
