Hurricanes, Golden Knights make wild Stanley Cup Final history after Game 2

The 2026 Stanley Cup Final between the Carolina Hurricanes and Vegas Golden Knights is shaping up to be a dandy — and it’s already making all kinds of history after just two games.

The Knights erased a two-goal deficit in Game 1, falling behind 2-0 before rallying for a 5-4 victory. Game 2 followed a similar script in reverse, as Carolina overcame a 2-0 deficit of its own before earning a dramatic 4-3 overtime win.

It marks the first Stanley Cup Final in league history in which both teams have recorded multi-goal comeback victories through the first two games of the series, according to NHL Public Relations.

“This is the first time across the 108 all-time Stanley Cup Final series that each team has staged a multi-goal comeback win within the first two contests. The only other Final to begin with consecutive multi-goal comeback wins, regardless of who won, was also in the Wild Card era (2014: LAK won both vs. NYR).”

Carolina also joined rare company with its Game 2 comeback. The Hurricanes became the first team in more than 80 years to win a Stanley Cup Final game after trailing by multiple goals in the final 10 minutes, per NHL PR.

The only other teams to accomplish the feat were the 1944 Canadiens, the 1936 Maple Leafs and the 1931 Blackhawks.

The matchup is certainly delivering for hockey fans; Carolina and Vegas have combined for 16 goals, with momentum swings, late drama and overtime heroics already becoming recurring themes.

Seth Jarvis delivered the biggest moment of Game 2, scoring the overtime winner after the Hurricanes watched Mark Stone tie the game with just 81 seconds remaining in regulation.

Carolina earned an early power play in overtime, and Jarvis capitalized, scoring his fourth goal of the 2026 Stanley Cup Playoffs and sending the Lenovo Center crowd into a frenzy.

Now tied 1-1, the series shifts to Las Vegas for a pivotal Game 3 on Saturday night. Puck is set to drop just after 8:00 p.m. ET at T-Mobile Arena.
