Hurricanes break out Storm Surge after Stanley Cup-clinching Game 6 win
The Carolina Hurricanes may have been thousands of miles away from home, but that didn’t stop them from bringing one of their most beloved traditions to the Stanley Cup celebration.
Moments after defeating the Vegas Golden Knights in Game 6 of the Stanley Cup Final on Sunday night, the Hurricanes broke out the Storm Surge on the ice at T-Mobile Arena.
The celebration, which has become synonymous with Carolina hockey over the last several years, made an appearance in one of the biggest moments in franchise history after the Hurricanes captured their first title since 2006.
A video shared by the NHL quickly made the rounds on social media, showing the players gathering at center ice before performing the Storm Surge together while celebrating with Lord Stanley.

It was a fitting scene for a team that dominated throughout the 2026 Stanley Cup Playoffs.
Carolina finished the postseason with a remarkable 16-3 record, sweeping both the Ottawa Senators and Philadelphia Flyers before eliminating the Montreal Canadiens in five games and the Golden Knights in six.
Despite trailing 2-1 in the SCF, the Hurricanes persevered, winning three consecutive games, including a 3-0 Brandon Bussi shutout in Game 6.
The Storm Surge has become a signature part of the Hurricanes’ identity since it was introduced during the 2018-19 season. While the tradition initially drew criticism from some hockey pundits, it quickly became a fan favorite in Raleigh and helped establish the franchise’s unique culture.
Seven years later, it remains one of the most recognizable celebrations in the sport.
The franchise spent years trying to get over the hump after winning its first Stanley Cup in 2006. It took several years of heartbreak — and multiple Eastern Conference Final losses — but the culture was on full display following Sunday’s historic win.
Instead of saving the celebration for when they returned to North Carolina, the Hurricanes brought a piece of home with them to Vegas. They’re finally back on top of the hockey world two decades later, and the celebration reflected just how much the moment meant to the organization.
For the Canes, it was the perfect ending to a championship season.
