How Sabrina Ionescu’s ‘phenomenal’ presence in injury return sparked Commissioner’s Cup berth

The New York Liberty are one of the hottest teams in the WNBA. New York beat Washington 86-64 on Sunday, logging their seven consecutive victory. The Liberty clinched their spot in the Commissioner’s Cup with the win, going 5-0 in qualifying games. New York got a big boost in Sunday’s game by getting one of their brightest stars back on the court.

Liberty head coach Chris DeMarco had nothing but good things to say about Sabrina Ionescu after her return from injury.

“She was phenomenal,” DeMarco said after the game, per The Athletic’s Annie Costabile. “You could feel her presence out there. But it’s hard sometimes when you’re out for a while, you come back trying to find your game and I thought it was really good decision-making from her.”

DeMarco confirmed that Ionescu would make her return against the Mystics. However, he warned that Ionescu would be on a minutes restriction in her first game back in several weeks.

Ionescu did not set the stat sheet on fire in her return, but she did start looking like her old self. The veteran point guard played 26 minutes, logging five points, three rebounds, and three assists. She went 1-of-4 from the field and was efficient at the free throw line, going 3-of-4.

Jonquel Jones (20 points, 4 rebounds) and Breanna Stewart (14 points, 12 rebounds) led the way for New York.

Now the Liberty are slated to play in the Commissioner’s Cup on June 30th. They will face the winner of the Western Conference, which will either be the Las Vegas Aces or the Minnesota Lynx.

In the meantime, New York will look to keep their lengthy winning streak alive.

Next up for the Liberty is a road game against the Sky on June 17th at 8PM ET.
