How Dodgers stunning loss to Cubs ended specific 71-game streak
The Los Angeles Dodgers are the best team in baseball, but they are human. On Friday, they fell short to the Chicago Cubs 6-4, despite Chicago’s hobbled pitching rotation.
The Dodgers had a 4-0 lead, and starting pitcher Emmet Sheehan pitched 6.1 innings and struck out 10. Then, in the top of the 7th, the bullpen folded. Relievers Alex Vesia, Blake Treinen, and Tanner Scott couldn’t hold the Cubs’ offense, and they tied the game in the top of the 8th inning.
The Cubs put up two more runs in the top of the 9th to secure the win.
In the process, the Dodgers suffered not just a stunning loss but also saw a little-known 71-game winning streak come to an end, per Jesse Rogers of ESPN. Before Friday, Los Angeles had won 71 straight home games when leading by four or more runs in the 7th inning and beyond.
This marks their first loss under these circumstances since June 16, 2023, against the San Francisco Giants.
Rogers posted on X, formerly Twitter, about the LA relievers compared to those of the Cubs.
“Check out the salaries of the relievers from pens last night. Wide disparity!”
Dodgers don’t lose often like they did last night: L.A. had won 71 straight home games when leading by 4+ runs in the 7th inning or later (1st loss since June 16, 2023 vs Giants). Check out the salaries of the relievers from pens last night. Wide disparity!

Scott has a base salary of $11 million and signed a four-year, $72 million contract in January 2025. Treinen is expected to earn up to $11 million this season and signed a two-year, $22 million extension in December 2024. Meanwhile, Veisa has a base salary of $3,550,000.
In contrast, the Cubs’ relievers, Ryan Rolison and Corbin Martin, make $1.5 million combined this season. The Dodgers have the largest payroll in MLB at over $400 million.
