Heat’s Bam Adebayo reacts to LaMelo Ball’s fine

Tensions from Tuesday’s play-in matchup between the Miami Heat and Charlotte Hornets carried into the following night after the NBA handed down discipline to LaMelo Ball. The league fined Ball $35,000 for what it described as unnecessary and reckless contact with Bam Adebayo, a sequence that led to a lower back injury and ended Adebayo’s night early.

Ball also received an additional $25,000 fine for profane language during a postgame interview. The incident itself drew attention because officials did not call a foul in real time, despite Adebayo falling hard after contact near the baseline.

Adebayo questions review process

Adebayo did not hold back when addressing the situation. He pointed to what he sees as inconsistency in how the league reviews plays.

“It doesn’t make sense that 3 or 4 plays can go by and you can review a three point shot. You can’t review a hostile act?…LaMelo makes what 30M a year? The 60K fine he’s not going to see…nobody is going to know the truth but LaMelo if it was dirty or not…”

His frustration centered less on the fine itself and more on the lack of an in-game whistle or review. The play unfolded early in the second quarter, and action continued while Adebayo remained on the floor.

Heat head coach Erik Spoelstra echoed that sentiment after the loss, saying Ball should have been ejected and that officials missed the moment entirely.

The sequence proved costly. Miami lost 127-126 in overtime, with Ball later scoring the game-winning basket. Adebayo’s early exit left a noticeable gap, closing the Heat’s season under circumstances that continue to spark debate around officiating and accountability.
