HBCU coach shows supports for Donald Trump executive order

An HBCU football coach has shown support for an aspect of Donald Trump’s “Saving College Sports” executive order. In April, Trump signed an executive order said to address the transfer portal and NIL in college athletics. The NCAA has recently been working with Congress to pass the SCORE Act, which aims to prevent athletes from gaining employment status and remove restrictions on Name, Image, and Likeness compensation, allowing schools to set rules and regulations regarding NIL.

In a recent interview with Brian Holloway on the Aggie Pridecast, North Carolina A&T head football coach Shawn Gibbs says that he likes the transfer portal element of the executive order.

“I kind of like the executive order, as far as kids still having the freedom to transfer, but just one time. After that, you’d have to sit out a year, which I think would kind of cut back on things.”

The regulations of NIL, the transfer portal, and other elements of college athletics have been a hot topic over the past few seasons. However, only Congress can pass a law affecting the NCAA and its member institutions, as the NCAA operates as a private sector organization. Once legislation such as the SCORE Act is passed by the House and the Senate, it would go to the President’s desk and could be signed into law or vetoed.

Florida A&M head basketball coach Charlie Ward was a part of President Donald Trump’s White House roundtable on college sports in early March. In an interview on Fox & Friends, he expressed concerns about revenue sharing and suggested implementing a salary cap.

“The rev share part is up to the school, but now the schools have collectives. Those collectives are supporting the school by adding money on top of what’s already shared, and that’s where you see the bigger numbers and top players getting certain amounts.”

He added, “I’ve always said, if you cap the rev share, it’s just like the NBA or the NFL. You have a luxury tax. If a school goes over the amount, then put it in a fund. Being from Florida A&M, a smaller university in Division I. I say let that money trickle down to us.”
