Harvey Elliott gets career lifeline from European club once managed by his namesake

Harvey Elliott is set to complete a loan move to Valencia this season, talkSPOT understands.

Valencia are understood to have reached a verbal agreement with Liverpool to allow Elliott to join the LaLiga club on a temporary switch.

Elliott is set to undergo his Valencia medical with the Spanish club set to cover the majority of his salary.

Three other clubs are tried to sign Elliott before the end of the transfer window.

The former England Under-21 international isn’t part of Andoni Iraola‘s plans, having been left out of the squad for Liverpool’s opening two Premier League games this season.

Harvey Elliott transfer to Valencia

Elliott become just the second English player to represent the LaLiga side – although they were once managed by former Tottenham player Jimmy Elliott in the 1920s.

However, the only other English player to actually play a competitive game for the club is Max Aarons.

The ex-England U21 full-back joined Valencia on loan from Bournemouth in January 2025.

It wasn’t the most successful loan spell, given he made just five appearances, but Elliott could follow in his footsteps.

Last year, Elliott joined Aston Villa on loan near the end of the transfer window.

The deal was a loan with an obligation to buy for £35million.

This would have been triggered if Elliott had appeared a certain number of times.

However, Unai Emery revealed very early on that Elliott wouldn’t be playing that much because of the clause.

Villa decided they didn’t want to sign Elliott at all, so he spent the majority of last year on the bench.

Across all competitions, he played just ten games for Villa.

Iraola not convinced

When asked about why Elliott played no part against Newcastle, Liverpool head coach Iraola had a pretty brutal response.

In his post-match interview, he said: “Harvey is trying and improving every week, but I still prefer other options, about the balance on the bench.

“That’s why James McConnell was in the squad, but it’s now another new week and new chances for everyone. They have to keep that mentality!”
