Harry Redknapp: I spoke to Daniel Levy and he would appoint me as next Tottenham manager

Daniel Levy would have turned to Harry Redknapp to rescue Tottenham.

That’s according to Redknapp himself, who revealed on talkSPORT Breakfast on Thursday morning that he has spoken with the former Spurs chairman.

Sorry Spurs are in complete disarray following Tuesday’s 5-2 defeat to Atletico Madrid as they crashed to a sixth successive loss for the first time in their history.

Atletico were three goals to the good with 15 minutes on the clock after a disastrous start to the clash in Madrid, with Antonin Kinsky hauled off in the 17th minute.

Spurs have now lost all four matches under Igor Tudor, with the Croatian under pressure to turn the club’s fortunes around.

Tudor only came in last month to stop the rot following Thomas Frank’s long overdue departure, but has failed to have the desired effect in the capital.

Indeed, Spurs are now just one point above the relegation zone and could drop into the bottom three if they fail to beat Liverpool at Anfield on Sunday.

While he is likely to remain in charge for the Reds clash, talkSPORT understands that Tudor’s job is already on the line having alienated a number of the Tottenham players. His treatment of Kinsky in particular did not go down well in the dressing room.

Former players Ryan Mason and Robbie Keane are among the candidates to step in until the end of the season.

Redknapp’s name has also come up in the conversation, having managed Tottenham between 2008 and 2012, famously succeeding Juande Ramos when they had just two points from the opening eight matches of the 2008-09 campaign.

The former West Ham and Pompey boss openly made himself available for the Spurs job live on talkSPORT Breakfast last week.

The 79-year-old has since confirmed that he has spoken with former chairman Levy, who surprisingly left his Spurs role in September, and that, if it were up to him, the ex-Tottenham supremo would turn to Redknapp to bail the club out.

“I got a phone call last week from Daniel, funnily enough,” Redknapp began on talkSPORT Breakfast.

“I think I spoke to him once since I left all that time ago, and I was in the car last week and suddenly the phone goes, it’s Daniel Levy.

“I thought ‘that’s strange’ and I was on the phone to him for about half hour, chatting to him and he was explaining what happened to him, and how he got marched out of there, which was really strange.”

‘I would bring you back’

Redknapp then spoke about how Levy left the club before and the former chairman’s feelings towards Spurs, before adding: “And he did say to me ‘If I was there now, and I’m not just saying it, I would bring you back in until the end of the season, Harry’ – so it would have been interesting.”

Former Spurs striker Jermain Defoe also phoned in to the Breakfast Show to discuss Spurs’ current plight.

Defoe shone at the club on two separate permanent spells between 2004 and 2008, and again between 2009 and 2014, and was recently the U18s coach at the club.

‘100 per cent’

When asked if he’d want to be part of a potential rebuild should Spurs succumb to relegation, the 43-year-old said: “100%, obviously with the boss (Redknapp)!”

Redknapp then replied: “He’s my first signing! Don’t hold your breath waiting for it to happen, J, because I don’t think I will get the phone call, but if I did, I’d bring him back for sure.”

Spurs are winless in 11 in the league heading into Sunday’s game at Anfield as they look to pull away from danger.

The relegation-threatened capital outfit then return to the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium next week for their second leg Champions League meeting with Atletico before a must-win welcome of Nottingham Forest ahead of the international break.
