Hack-a-Mitch backfires after early 2-2 Mitchell Robinson free throws

Mitchell Robinson became a healthy clearance for Game 2 of the NBA Finals. The San Antonio Spurs thought sending Robinson to the line would backfire. “Hack-a-Mitch” put the New York Knicks at the early advantage, though.

Robinson, dealing with a bad finger that nearly wiped away his finals availability, went 2-for-2 at the white stripe. And he hit both baskets while hearing the decibel levels inside Frost Bank Center rise.

Robinson often is New York’s shakiest free throw shooter. He even started 1-of-4 from the line. His team fell behind early once again too.

San Antonio built a 12-point lead this time. The Spurs squandered a 14-point advantage to open the series before falling 105-95. Robinson and the Knicks managed to cut it down to three with under six minutes left in the second quarter.

Head coach Mike Brown allowed Robinson to play six minutes on the floor during the first half. He responded by chipping in five early points.

But this time Karl-Anthony Towns rose as the top scorer on the Knicks’ side, dropping 14 points before halftime. KAT hit that mark with under 5:15 left in the second.

Game 1 Knicks hero Jalen Brunson banked the first basket for New York. He scored eight before the five-minute mark. Mikal Bridges scored six while OG Anunoby dropped five early points.

But again, Robinson withstood the physicality of San Antonio early. He controlled his composure and cranked up his focus when he took to the line. New York likely will need that version of Robinson for the rest of the game, as NYK aims to go up 2-0. But Robinson got slapped with a technical foul at the 4:56 mark.
