David Moyes told to resign with Everton staring at relegation after shambolic transfer window

David Moyes has been told to resign from the Everton job after their disastrous end to the transfer window.

The Toffees ended up selling Iliman Ndiaye and Beto on deadline day and saw their move for Folarin Balogun from Monaco collapse.

An issue thrown up in his medical saw the deal renegotiated at the last minute, a deal sheet was in, only for Balogun to have a change of heart.

It leaves Everton woefully short going into the rest of the season, certainly until January when they can attempt to strengthen.

They are now scrambling to possibly sign a free agent with Jamie Vardy and Anthony Martial both linked.

Toffees fans are now in open revolt against the club’s board.

On talkSPORT’s Fiery Fridays, chief football correspondent Alex Crook outlined just how fuming Moyes will be.

Crook said: “I wouldn’t have wanted to be in the room with David Moyes when he found out that Balogun had walked out of his move from Monaco because, from what I’m told, Moyes’ head was ready to explode at the weekend when they were trying to sell Harrison Armstrong to Nottingham Forest. 

“A deal was agreed between clubs. A medical was booked in. Everton only pulled out of that deal because of the backlash from their manager and from the supporters.

“There was that comment after the game when David Moyes was asked about the reaction from fans when it came to the prospect of selling one of their up-and-coming young talents. He said, I’m an Evertonian. I think that’s all he needed to say.”

It is not just in attack where they have failed to meaningfully strengthen, it is at the back too. 

They are just an injury to a full back away from having a crisis.

Crook continued: “They’ve got 16 outfield players. They’ve got one left-back in [Vitalii Mykolenko]. They’ve got one right-back now in [Ainsley] Maitland-Niles, who isn’t really a right-back. He’d rather play in midfield. He’s said that throughout his career. They’re really short in that area. 

“That’s before you even get to the top end of the pitch, where they’ve only got Thierno Barry as a striker. I use that word in the loosest possible sense because I’ll be kind and say he’s inconsistent as a number nine.

“I could be a lot harsher on his ability to put the ball in the back of the net. They sold Beto to Fiorentina for £15m. Beto wasn’t a world-beater, but at least he could play the position and he had a bit of endeavour. They did that thinking they were going to get Folarin Balogun.

“Why on earth, if you’re the Everton board and the recruitment team, would you allow that Beto deal to go through? I know the Italian window closed earlier than England, but even still, why did they not make sure that Balogun was signed and sealed before they weakened their striking department? 

“They’d also by that point agreed to sell Ndiaye to Man City. I know it was difficult to keep him because he was pushing for a move somewhere, but he was still under contract. They could have stopped that deal and they didn’t.”

Everton ended last season in 13th and were challenging for the European spots all season.

It is looking like a completely different story and they have now been tipped as prime relegation candidates.

“From a position last season where they went into the final weekend with a chance of challenging for Europe, I think we have to go back now to talking about Everton as relegation contenders because they simply haven’t got enough players, they haven’t got enough cover. 

“If I was David Moyes, and this is where my heartache comes from, I think I would walk. I think he’s got enough credit in the bank, he’s got enough money.

“I don’t think he needs the hassle, quite frankly, of overseeing another relegation battle at Hill Dickinson Stadium. It’s a relegation battle that, in my opinion, is all their own making. 

“I’ll go back to last season, and I know he was keen for the board to invest in January because he saw it as a once in a lifetime opportunity.

“When you look at the big clubs that were struggling, the fact Everton were part of the European conversation, and I think David Moyes knew they weren’t going to challenge for Europe again this season. 

“Those big clubs were going to invest, they were going to reset, they were going to re-evaluate, and Everton would go back to being, at best, a mid-table Premier League team.

“Now they’re looking at relegation. But going back to January, all they did was recall the aforementioned Harrison Armstrong from his loan at Preston, and they took Tyrique George at Chelsea on loan. Is that really showing ambition to try and get the club into Europe in their first season at a new stadium? No.

“They’ve shown no ambition at all in this transfer window. If you’re doing a 1-20 of Premier League clubs, City top for me in terms of this window, Everton, rock bottom. 

“All three newly promoted clubs have shown more ambition in the market and have got deeper squads than Everton. 

“I think David Moyes and the Everton fans have been badly let down and I think he should resign.”

Moyes rejoined Everton for his second spell in January 2025 and has won 24 of his 64 games in charge.

He previously spent 11 years at the club from 2002 to 2013, when he became Man United manager.
