A.J. Brown has career-best season and 3 other Patriots bold predictions for 2026 NFL season

The New England Patriots greatly exceeded expectations in year one of Mike Vrabel’s era as head coach, led by a stellar season from second year quarterback Drake Maye and an overachieving defense. The Patriots added a new superstar receiving target for Maye in an offseason trade with the Philadelphia Eagles that netted A.J. Brown for two draft picks.

Brown’s addition led one Patriots insider to make a bold declaration before the 2026-27 season.

Last season, the Patriots ran into a brick wall in Super Bowl LX as they were beaten 29-13 by Mike Macdonald’s Seattle Seahawks, casting doubt over their future status as Super Bowl title contenders.

This season, Brown’s addition has changed the equation for Vrabel’s team, conjuring up Lombardi Trophy visions in the heads of millions of Patriots fans who know their way around a Super Bowl parade (or six).

Brown now has a chance to play with one of the NFL’s best young quarterbacks, which should increase his skills to new heights. Here are four predictions for the 2026-27 season as the Patriots get ready for their season opener:

Prediction #1: Banner year for Brown

Brown had a 1,000-yard season for the Eagles in 2025-26 but it didn’t approach the two 1,400-plus yard seasons he reeled off in 2022 and 2023.

This season, I expect another 1,000-plus yard season simply by virtue of Maye throwing Brown his passes and Josh McDaniels calling the plays, closer to the 1,400-yard mark than the 1,000 yard mark.

Brown and Maye seem tailor made for each other, similar to when Randy Moss originally joined the Patriots. Both Maye and Brown are premium athletes with elite size and instincts that will combine to create nightmares on a week-in, week-in basis for opposing cornerbacks and safeties.

Brown might not have the most yards or receptions in his NFL career, but I expect he will make playing his position look easy and have better playoff performances than in recent years.

Prediction #2: No drop-off for Maye

Maye’s 2025-26 season was so efficient and so dominant that it’s hard to imagine how he can possibly top it.

Statistics are often difficult to predict but the prediction here is that Maye’s impact will go far beyond the stat sheet in 2026-27. The former North Carolina Tar Heels star has everything he needs both between his ears and in front of him, teammate-wise, to be the NFL’s best quarterback this season, both in the regular season and the playoffs.

Having Brown to throw to will give him new insights on how to play under pressure and how to find open receivers down the field.

I expect Maye to have another MVP-caliber season, and possibly to increase his rushing numbers while the field opens up due to bracket coverage on his new deep threat, Brown.

Prediction #3: Vrabel Legacy 

2026-27 will be the year coach Vrabel cements himself as one of the most successful Patriots figures of all-time as New England corks off another deep playoff run in the AFC. Vrabel brushed aside a Dianna Russini question recently and has a laser focus entering the season.

I am expecting another AFC East title for Vrabel and his team with sparse competition on the horizon in their division excepting Josh Allen and the Buffalo Bills.

This season, the Patriots will have another offseason of Vrabel teachings under their belts and a golden opportunity to make a run at a Super Bowl championship.

Prediction #4: A.J. Brown a fan favorite 

Patriots fans love dynamic, explosive wide receivers and A.J. Brown is the latest in a long line of them.

Brown has a famously religious and fanatical work ethic that will keep him at or near the top of his game for the foreseeable future. The chance to work with a stellar passing quarterback in Maye will also spark a new hope and new lightness in the longtime former Eagles pass catcher.

This season feels a lot like Brady and Moss’ in 2007 that resulted in a 16-0 regular season record, albeit an unfortunate loss to the New York Giants later that season in the Super Bowl.

I don’t think the Patriots will win this year’s Super Bowl, but I do expect a dynamite regular season performance from Brown, Maye, Rhamondre Stevenson and the rest of Vrabel’s starters on offense.

The defense is well schooled and talented enough to play at a high level.

The prediction here is that Brown endears himself to Patriots fans with his long routes and touchdown catches while making it all look surprisingly easy in a weak AFC East. He instantly makes the Patriots’ wide receiver depth chart better which will be needed come playoff time.

This is a contending team in every facet, despite one exec’s recent crazy prediction.

Playoff time is of course a different animal and the Patriots know what it takes to win the conference.

Will they have enough to win the Super Bowl after last year’s loss at the hands of Sam Darnold and the Seahawks? I personally don’t think it will happen, but A.J. Brown makes an already great team better with potential for much more in 2026-27.
