Aryna Sabalenka claps back at reporter over party question

Aryna Sabalenka shared her frustration at a reporter’s question during a recent press conference.

After Sabalenka’s win against Polina Iatcenko, 6-1, 6-1, on Wednesday, September 2, during the second round of the US Open women’s singles tournament, the tennis star attended the required post-match press conference.

Sabalenka, who has notably been active on social media at sponsored events leading up to the US Open, was asked by Matt Futterman of The Athletic about her week filled with “lots of parties and fun and stuff like that.”

Futterman’s question did not go over well with the tennis star where she reacted by shaking her head and rolling her eyes.

“You guys are like a joke,” she said. “Parties, fun. Like why would you even say that? Why would you even think about that? Like what kind of question is that? Just because I posted like some activities with brands and you think that I’ve been partying, not training?”

Futterman attempted to clarify his questioning by saying he wasn’t suggesting Sabalenka had been partying prior the tournament.

“You literally said that,” she responded.

Futterman tried again by asking if she was able to switch gears and get more serious once the matches began,

“Oh yeah, I wasn’t serious before that,” Sabalenka sarcastically replied. “Next question.”

The next reporter began to ask the tennis star a question but she wasn’t finished and addressed Futterman once last time, “Think before you say stuff.”

While she was booked and busy the week before competition she clearly still had her head in the game given her current standing in the tournament as she chases her third consecutive U.S. Open title.

Futterman shared an update to the situation with a post on X, writing, “She and her agent actually texted me to apologize, which I appreciated.”

As the situation is seemingly under the bridge, Sabalenka will be moving on to face Kamilla Rakhimova in the third round of the US Open on Friday, September 4, 2026, starting at  4 pm ET.
