Guardians’ Stephen Vogt celebrates Angel Genao for ‘unbelievable’ energy

The Cleveland Guardians are hanging on for dear life in the hunt for a postseason spot, and they earned a huge win over the Toronto Blue Jays on Tuesday, 6-1, which furthers their cause. They moved to 70-68 on the season, and they currently hold a 1.5-game lead over the Texas Rangers for the third and final Wild Card spot in the AL.

Their win over the Blue Jays on Tuesday did not come easy even though they won by a comfortable five-run margin in the end. They were holding on to a slim one-run lead in the seventh inning, but momentum turned completely in their favor when manager Stephen Vogt inserted rookie Angel Genao as a pinch-hitter with one run on and nobody out in the inning.

Genao wasted no time making his mark on the game. On the very first pitch he saw, he unloaded a huge swing and deposited a meatball of a sinker from Blue Jays reliever Joe Mantiply towards the left-field stands to give the Guardians a 4-1 lead.

He did not stop there. In the top of the ninth, Genao made an incredible defensive play on a ground ball up the middle from Alejandro Kirk. Going to his left, the Guardians rookie launched a pinpoint throw while jumping to nail Kirk at first for the first out of the inning.

Vogt could not be any happier from the contributions he got from the rookie, who made his mark in just his 22nd game in the big leagues.

“What a credit to Angel Genao for being ready. He’s a kid who probably never pinch hit in the minor leagues. So for him to come out and be ready for that first pitch, he did not miss it, and making that play up the middle. What a huge play for him,” Vogt said, via Mason Horodyski of WEWS.

The Guardians signed Genao as an international amateur free agent back in 2021. He doesn’t project to be a consistent power hitter in MLB, but he can get on base and play the infield well.
