Guardians make Bo Naylor move after Patrick Bailey trade

The Cleveland Guardians are making another move after completing a trade on Saturday with the San Francisco Giants. After picking up catcher Patrick Bailey in that trade, Cleveland is now clearing up space by optioning catcher Bo Naylor to Triple-A Columbus.

Naylor is struggling at the plate this year.

“Naylor has slashed just .143/.200/.238 through 90 plate appearances this season, so Cleveland will send him back down to the minors to get him back on track,” CBS Sports reported. “The Guardians traded for Patrick Bailey to replace Naylor on the active roster and provide defensive help at catcher.”

In return for Bailey, Cleveland gave up a draft pick and left-handed pitcher Matt “Tugboat” Wilkinson, ESPN reported. This season, Bailey is also having struggles on offense. He is batting just .146 at the plate.

“Austin Hedges is also likely to continue making starts behind the plate, given Bailey’s recent offensive struggles,” CBS reported.

Bailey finished the 2025 season with the Giants, batting in 55 runs. He hit six home runs and also finished the campaign at a .222 batting average.

Bailey is an outstanding defensive player. He has won two Gold Gloves, which came in the last two MLB seasons. Cleveland hopes that defense can help the club win the American League Central.

This season the Giants are struggling. San Francisco is currently last in the National League West, with a 15-23 record.

The Guardians meanwhile are in a battle in the AL Central this season. Cleveland currently leads the division, with a 21-19 record overall. The Guardians have won three games in a row.

Cleveland plays Saturday against the Minnesota Twins.
