Guardians’ Angel Martinez exits Red Sox game with foot injury

A 9-1 loss to the Boston Red Sox on Saturday snapped the Cleveland Guardians’ two-game winning streak. Heading into Sunday’s series finale, a win could increase the Guardians’ AL Central lead back to three games. Saturday’s defeat stings even more with the early exit of outfielder Angel Martinez. According to team beat reporter Mason Horodyski on X, formerly Twitter, Martinez left due to left foot inflammation.

“The #Guardians broadcast says that Angel Martínez exited today’s game with left foot inflammation,” reported Horodyski.

The 24-year-old is having a career year, hitting .243 with nine home runs and 29 RBI to this point. His eight stolen bases already match last year’s total. After playing at both second base and the outfield last season, Martinez is exclusively an outfielder for the Guardians so far this campaign. This could be one of the contributing factors to an improved 2026.

With an injury of this nature, recovery could be quick. It could also be tricky. Martinez could be back only after a couple of games, avoiding a trip to the IL in the process. However, it’s still too soon to tell how long the emerging outfielder will be out. Cleveland is also without fellow outfielder Steven Kwan for a few games while he’s on the paternity list. For the moment, rookie Chase DeLauter and utilityman Daniel Schneemann will need to team up with the Guardians’ bench to cover both Martinez and Kwan. Can Cleveland maintain its division lead without two of their most valued contributors? The next few days will give the Guards’ faithful an answer.
