Gregg Popovich, Victor Wembanyama share Spurs special moment before Game 3

Gregg Popovich is no longer the head coach of the San Antonio Spurs after leaving the early in the 2024-25 season. However, the 77-year-old held that position for 29 years and he led the Spurs to five NBA championships. He is among the most respected figures in the game and he still has a strong position with the team as President of Basketball Operations.

While Mitch Johnson is the head coach of the Spurs, Popovich will speak with players from time to time. Popovich was seen speaking All-Star center Victor Wembanyama Friday prior to the third game of the Western Conference Finals against the Oklahoma City Thunder.

The two teams go into Game 3 tied at 1-1. The Spurs won the first game in double overtime while the Thunder rebounded in Game 2 with a home victory. Wembanyama was the dominant force in San Antonio’s triumph as he battered the defending NBA champions with 41 points and 24 rebounds.

Wembanyama is already considered one of the league’s best players and that performance against Oklahoma City brought about comparisons to all-time greats Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, Bill Russell and Wilt Chamberlain.

However, in the second game of the series, the Thunder attempted to slow Wembanyama down by getting physical with him. That was an attempt to keep him from dominating on the inside. The likelihood is that Popovich was talking to Wembanyama about ways to go about combatting that physical play and giving him a chance to fight back against players like Isaiah Hartenstein and Lu Dort

Wembanyama finished third in the NBA’s recent MVP voting. Shai Gilgeous-Alexander won that honor for the second consecutive season.
