Golden Knights’ Mark Stone, Jack Eichel goals disallowed after Hurricanes challenges
Fans at T-Mobile Arena were incensed early in the second period of Game 3 of the 2026 Stanley Cup Final, as the Vegas Golden Knights had not one but two straight goals called off thanks to a pair of successful challenges by the Carolina Hurricanes.
A would-be goal from captain Mark Stone was eventually overturned after it was ruled that Brett Howden was offside while passing him the puck. And just minutes later, the Golden Knights had another goal waived off because of goaltender interference. Jack Eichel slipped the puck past goaltender Frederik Andersen, who had just been run into by Ivan Barbashev a split second earlier.

The good news for the Golden Knights is that they soon did take a 2-0 lead over the Hurricanes in even quicker fashion than it took for them to have both goals called off. Tomas Hertl scored a power play goal, giving Vegas the 1-0 lead. And just 16 seconds later, a centering pass from forward Mitch Marner deflected off the stick of Hurricanes defenseman Sean Walker and past a bewildered Andersen for a 2-0 lead; it was Marner’s first career goal in the Stanley Cup Final.
Not long after that, Marner, who currently leads all NHL players in scoring during the Stanley Cup Playoffs, scored his second goal of the game just moments after he was denied on a breakaway attempt.
The Golden Knights are currently running away with this one, and the Hurricanes will have to come through with a monumental effort if they are to avoid falling into a two games to one series deficit.
