Golden Knights make history with multi-goal Game 1 comeback vs. Hurricanes
The Vegas Golden Knights drew first blood in the 2026 NHL Stanley Cup Final, and they did it in thrilling comeback fashion.
The Golden Knights looked as though they were going to get embarrassed in the series opener against the Carolina Hurricanes at the Lenovo Center in Raleigh, North Carolina, on Tuesday. The Hurricanes scored the first two goals of the contest, both coming from Nikolaj Ehlers in the opening period. Ehlers even scored the first one just 25 seconds into the contest.
But the Golden Knights’ will was hard to break, as they completed a 5-4 come-from-behind win to not just get the 1-0 series lead but also make NHL history.
“Entering tonight, road teams were 0-55 when down multiple goals at any point in Game 1 of the Stanley Cup Final. Vegas was down 2-0 in the first period,” ESPN Insights shared via a social media post on X, formerly Twitter.
The Golden Knights seemed like a relatively good bet to be the team that would break that staggering trend. So far in the 2026 NHL playoffs, Vegas has four wins after trailing in the first period.
In any case, that was an incredible feat by the Golden Knights, who are also now on a seven-game winning streak. Their last loss was in Game 4 of their second-round series against the Anaheim Ducks. That was before Vegas shockingly swept the Colorado Avalanche in the Western Conference Final.
Game 1 of the Hurricanes series had three deadlocks before Tomas Hertl scored the game-winning goal with under four minutes left in the third frame.
