Glen Powell ‘excited’ as he breaks silence on rumored movie about Yankees icon Lou Gehrig

It appears all but confirmed that Glen Powell will play Yankees icon Lou Gehrig in a new movie that will team him up again with Hit Man director Richard Linklater.

Speaking to PIX11 News, Powell confirmed that he will play Gehrig in a new movie, and he appears to be “excited” about the project.

“The more I’ve gotten to research him, I’m just honored that I get to live in that arena with that man,” Powell said of Gehrig. “It’s really going to be a beautiful story, and Rick’s the perfect guy to tell it. So, we’re already getting very excited about the potential of this one.”

This is not his first rodeo with Linklater. Earlier in his career, he appeared in Fast Food Nation, well before his breakthrough in Top Gun: Maverick.

They would later reunite to make Apollo 10 1/2: A Space Age Childhood, an animated movie, in 2022. The following year, they co-wrote Hit Man together, which Powell starred in and Linklater directed.

Currently, Powell is promoting the second season of Chad Powers, which premiered on Hulu on Thursday, Sep. 3, 2026. He co-created the series with Michael Waldron.

Who was Yankees icon Lou Gehrig?

The upcoming movie about Gehrig will chronicle the Yankees icon’s life. He played for the Yankees for 17 seasons from 1923 to 1939.

During his career with the Yankees, Gehrig was named to seven All-Star teams from 1933 to 1939, and he was the AL MVP twice (in 1927 and 1936). New York also won six World Series while he was playing for them.

Unfortunately, he passed away a couple of years after his career ended on June 2, 1941. He was just 37 years old at the time of his death.

He passed away due to amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, better known as ALS, which prematurely ended his playing career. ALS is sometimes referred to as Lou Gehrig’s disease.
