Gio Reyna shuts down ‘redemption’ question after making USMNT World Cup roster
New York-native and Borussia Mönchengladbach star Giovanni Reyna was one of the more surprising inclusions in the USMNT’s 26-member squad for the upcoming FIFA World Cup. This was because despite his regular contributions to the team, Reyna last started a game for his club back in December, and has played just 137 minutes of football for the German team since the start of the year.
However, the 23-year-old attacker shut down talk of a potential redemption, instead maintaining focus on the fact that he is going to represent his nation at the biggest stage of all, per a post on X by Golazo America.
“This group means so much to me… I want to help in any way possible."

“Great, honestly just happy to be here, happy to be back with the group. Lot of excitement and joy within the group right now, so it’s lot to look forward to. No, not really. I don’t know what this might be redemption for. I am just happy to be here with the team. This group means so much to me. I want to help in any way possible,” he said.
Reyna appeared intent on citing his lack of gametime as a part and parcel of the game, and instead appears fully focused on the upcoming tournament. This is despite the fact that he has only one goal from 19 appearances thus far for his club this season.
USMNT Head coach Mauricio Pochettino also cited Reyna’s experience and quality, claiming that he wanted to trust players with ‘experience,’ per Goal.
“I think we need to trust the players that have experience, and I think that is really important. During our process, we challenged experienced players. Why? Because we wanted to get the best, we wanted to be competitive, we want to change this mindset. [Gio] can add different things to the team,” he said.
And well, Reyna has been a crucial factor for the USMNT whenever he has played. Across 36 appearances thus far, he has nine goals, although he is yet to score in the 2026 campaign.
