Giants’ Ryan Walker hilariously throws out Marlins’ Heriberto Hernández with glove

The San Francisco Giants produced one of baseball’s strangest defensive highlights Friday night, and Ryan Walker turned it into an out. His quick improvisation against the Miami Marlins gave the game a rare moment at loanDepot Park.

Walker faced Heriberto Hernandez in the seventh inning of a tight game when the Marlins designated hitter chopped a sharp grounder back toward the mound. The reliever moved to his right, fielded it cleanly, then ran into an unusual problem.

The ball stuck inside Walker’s glove, leaving him without time to transfer it cleanly. Instead of panicking, the right-hander improvised and threw the entire glove toward Bryce Eldridge at first base.

The play looked bizarre, but it was legal because the baseball remained lodged inside the glove. Throwing detached equipment at a loose ball creates a penalty, but Walker’s situation allowed the toss.

That distinction turned a potential blooper into a brilliant reaction. Hernandez likely reaches safely if Walker tries to dig the ball free before throwing to first.

The moment also carried franchise history. Former Giants pitcher Terry Mulholland made a similar play on Sept. 3, 1986, when he got a ball stuck in his glove.

For Walker, the moment displayed sharp instincts under pressure. For San Francisco, it kept a Marlins runner from reaching base in a close game. However, Miami ultimately prevailed in the series opener—a familiar script for the struggling 31-44 Giants, who sit 17.5 games back in the NL West heading into Saturday afternoon’s matchup.
