Giants’ Jung Hoo Lee joins Willie Mays in franchise history

Jung Hoo Lee was slashing .268/.311/.385/.696 when he returned from a back injury on May 29. One bonkers stretch later and he is now posting All-Star worthy numbers for the season. Everyone knows baseball is streaky, but this is hard to comprehend. The San Francisco Giants outfielder entered elite territory on Saturday afternoon.

Lee went 2-for-4 in a 3-2 extra-innings loss to the Chicago Cubs and now has a mind-boggling 22-plus hits in a nine-game span. The only other Giants players to accomplish that feat in the last 95 years are all-time great Willie Mays (1958), All-Star Whitey Lockman (1953) and Hall of Famer Bill Terry (1932), according to MLB researcher Sarah Langs.

San Francisco had high hopes when it signed the South Korean star to a six-year, $113 million contract in 2023, but nobody could have expected such chaos to ensue now. Following a middling first two years of his MLB career, Lee has been utterly sensational during this current road trip. He has recorded four or more hits three times in this span and is now batting .324 with a .359 on-base percentage, .449 slugging percentage, .808 OPS, three home runs and 14 doubles.

The 27-year-old left-handed hitter obviously lacks power, but that is not slowing him down whatsoever. He has helped the Giants ignite offensively and win three of their last four games. If San Francisco (26-39) has any chance of clawing its way back into the National League Wild Card race — presently eight and a half games out — Jung Hoo Lee must continue to produce.

Though, at the very least, the Giants should take solace in knowing that the Grandson of the Wind is indeed brimming with star potential. Now, he must prove it over the remainder of the season.
