Giannis Antetokounmpo bares soul in must-read rant about Bucks’ ownership, GM
The Milwaukee Bucks and Giannis Antetokounmpo have been back in the headlines this week for yet another reported rift between the two sides, who are still inexplicably together despite years of warning signs. This time, the controversy has centered around Antetokounmpo’s desire to play out the rest of this season, despite his team being well out of the playoff picture in the Eastern Conference.
Now, Antetokounmpo has spoken on why he is seemingly indecisive in making his feelings clear with the organization and using his influence to make changes, particularly regarding general manager Jon Horst, as well as the team’s ownership.
My job is to play basketball. That’s why I get paid. That’s what I love to do. Just play basketball. My job is not to organize things and bring the pieces. That is not my job,” said Antetokounmpo, per Lori Nickel of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel. “…I came from nothing. Zero, zero, I grew up in a bed that was like this [points to a loading cart in the hallway], me and my brothers had to sleep sideways, like sardines. So, what do I look like if I am going to the owners saying, ‘I want this, I want that, I want that.’ They give me a life that I would never have imagined.”
It was a brutally honest answer from a star who has established himself as the best player in Bucks franchise history, but who has also won just a singular playoff series since leading the Bucks to the 2021 NBA championship.
The writing has seemed to be on the wall for quite some time that a divorce between Antetokounmpo and the Bucks was in the best interests of both parties, but as of yet, it seems that the two sides will continue to bicker and take jabs at one another while still ultimately reiterating their commitment to keeping the flailing partnership intact.
