Georgetown legend Patrick Ewing recalls John Thompson cursing him out for signature shot
If there is a guy who is dying to see Georgetown win another national title, it is Patrick Ewing. He carried the Hoyas to the national crown in 1984, but since then, the team has yet to reclaim the throne.
Georgetown did not make it to the NCAA Tournament for the fifth straight year after tallying a 16-18 record, including 6-14 in the Big East.
The Hoyas were among the nation’s powerhouses during Ewing’s time. He was one of the most feared stars in college basketball. Aside from being a defensive menace, he made a living off his mid-range fallaway.
He, however, revealed on “The Pivot Podcast” that the late John Thompson, Ewing’s coach at Georgetown, dissuaded him from doing it.
“I took a shot from the free-throw line. He (Thompson) called a timeout (and said), ‘Get your m*********** a** in the paint. That’s where you belong. I was like, ‘Alright, coach.’ He always said he had a Ph.D. in profanity, but he was a great man,” shared Ewing.
Thompson, who passed away in 2020, molded Ewing into one of the greatest centers in the history of college basketball. He went on to star for the New York Knicks in the NBA.
Several years after his retirement, Ewing, who also tackled the Dream Team and the Redeem Team in the interview, followed Thompson’s footsteps and served as coach of Georgetown from 2017 to 2023. He, however, did not have a lot of success, making only one appearance in the NCAA Tournament.
Ewing has always credited Thompson for his illustrious career, appreciating the tough love, including the occasional profanity, that was accorded to him.
