Former Commanders QB Taylor Heinicke announces retirement with heartfelt post

Former Washington Commanders quarterback Taylor Heinicke, who was most recently with the Los Angeles Chargers before they released him in 2025, has announced his retirement from the NFL.

He made the announcement with a heartfelt post on Instagram in which he expressed gratitude for all those who made his journey to the NFL possible, helping to make his childhood dream become a reality.

“For 25 years, I had the pleasure to play this great sport of football,” Heinicke wrote via Yahoo Sports. “It has taught me a lot, not only about myself, but about life as well. Many ups and downs throughout the years, but the ups outweigh the downs tenfold.

Never in my wildest dreams did I think I would’ve been able to live this life. Thank you to all who have supported me in this journey. Thank you all who have believed in me. And thank you to those who gave me the opportunity to live out my childhood dream. Excited for this next chapter of my life! And always, Go Skins!”

After playing college ball at Old Dominion, Heinicke was never drafted into the NFL but spent time with multiple organizations, including the Minnesota Vikings, New England Patriots, Carolina Panthers, Atlanta Falcons, and Chargers, in addition to his time with the Washington Football Team/Commanders.

During his final season in Los Angeles, he appeared in five total games while throwing just four total passes.

He started 29 of the 42 games he appeared in and accumulated 6,663 yards with 39 touchdowns while throwing 28 interceptions.
