Flyers’ Porter Martone turns Penguins series into a historic showcase through 2 games
Philadelphia Flyers’ rookie Porter Martone made history Monday night in Game 2 of the opening playoff series against the Pittsburgh Penguins at PPG Paints Arena.
The 19-year-old scored late in the second period to give the Flyers a 1-0 lead in an eventual 3-0 win, helping Philadelphia take a 2-0 series lead. The goal came after a sequence involving multiple puck battles. Martone won two board battles in Pittsburgh’s zone, first outworking defenseman Connor Clifton to move the puck to Christian Dvorak, then supporting another battle before the puck reached Travis Konecny, whose shot deflected off Ryan Shea before Martone finished the rebound chance against goalie Stuart Skinner.
The goal was Martone’s second straight playoff game with a goal, making him the 12th teenager in NHL history to score in each of his first two postseason games. He also became the first Flyers player to achieve that feat. His Game 1 goal came in Philadelphia’s 3-2 win on Saturday. Additionally, Martone became the first teenager in NHL history to score a game-winning goal in each of his first two playoff games and the third rookie in league history to open a postseason with consecutive game-winning goals, joining Brett Hull (1988) and Cooney Weiland (1929).
Martone’s playoff run has also placed him in rare company in franchise history. He became just the third teenager in Philadelphia’s history with multiple playoff goals in a single postseason, joining Dainius Zubrus (1997) and Sean Couturier (2012). He is also the second teenager in team history to score in consecutive playoff games and the first to score in back-to-back road playoff games. League-wide, he is the seventh rookie teenager in history to score in consecutive road playoff games.
Martone’s rapid rise follows a strong transition from college hockey at Michigan State, where he recorded 25 goals and 50 points in 35 NCAA games. He joined the Flyers after being selected in the 2025 NHL Draft, listed as both a first-round pick and the sixth overall selection in separate accounts. Since making his NHL debut on March 31, he accumulated four goals and six assists in the final nine regular-season games, including an overtime winner for his first NHL goal against the Boston Bruins.
