Flyers HC Rick Tocchet makes striking admission after Game 3 loss to Hurricanes
With a 4-1 defeat to the Carolina Hurricanes in Game 3 Thursday night at Xfinity Mobile Arena, the Philadelphia Flyers now find themselves trailing 3-0 in the Eastern Conference second-round series.
The game featured heavy discipline issues, with 58 penalties and 156 penalty minutes recorded across the first three games of the series.
Following the loss, Philadelphia head coach Rick Tocchet made a telling remark, saying:
“We had a great first, and then it was all power play and penalty kill. Five-on-five, we were good. I thought we were the better team. Two games in a row, just a penalty fest. We’re not equipped for that.”
Carolina once again dictated the game through special teams, scoring two power-play goals and adding a short-handed tally. Jordan Staal opened the scoring with a power-play goal after Sean Couturier was penalized for tripping, giving the Hurricanes a 1-0 lead. Trevor Zegras responded for the Flyers, tying the game 1-1 in the second period on a delayed penalty after a strong early push that included multiple close chances from Travis Konecny, Porter Martone, and Alex Bump, all stopped by Frederik Andersen.
Philadelphia’s momentum did not last. Jalen Chatfield scored a short-handed goal just 11 seconds into a Flyers power play after Taylor Hall was penalized for boarding Travis Sanheim, swinging the game back in Carolina’s favor. Andrei Svechnikov stretched the lead to 3-1 early in the third period on another power-play goal, before Nikolaj Ehlers put the game away with a breakaway finish. The Hurricanes outshot Philadelphia 30-19, as Andersen stopped 18 of 19 shots.
Once again, the Flyers came up empty on the power play, going 0-for-5 and slipping to 3-for-33 in the playoffs, while Carolina has consistently capitalized, going 2-for-7 in the matchup.
The series returns to Xfinity Mobile Arena on Saturday, where Philadelphia faces elimination in Game 4 at 6 p.m. ET and long odds to mount a historic comeback. Only four teams have ever rallied from a 3-0 deficit in a best-of-seven series — the 1942 Toronto Maple Leafs, 1980 New York Islanders, 2010 Flyers and 2014 Los Angeles Kings.
