Moses Itauma eyed for blockbuster all-British Wembley Stadium fight in 2027

Moses Itauma could find himself on the biggest of British stages in 2027.

Rising star Itauma is set for his big breakout opportunity this month as he takes on Filip Hrgovic for the IBF heavyweight world title on August 29.

Should he taste victory, it will set up some blockbuster fights in 2027, with the victor to first face Frank Sanchez in a mandated first defence.

Beyond that, the ferocious young talent will likely look to unify the division next year if he can get through those tests unscathed,.

A blockbuster fight could come against Daniel Dubois, who currently holds the WBO title after beating Fabio Wardley in May.

He will first rematch Wardley in a bout which is also being eyed for the end of this year.

And promoter Frank Warren thinks that styles make fights, and they would make for a gripping spectacle.

He told BBC Sport: “It would be huge, absolutely huge.

“They’re big punchers. These guys are big, big punchers. They’re exciting. They’re never in boring fights. It would be a fantastic fight.”

Of course, if Wardley was to beat Dubois and get his revenge it could see the stablemates do battle.

They have previously suggested they would meet in the ring providing a series of title belts are on the table.

On the prospect of it being Itauma vs Wardley, Warren added: “I’ve seen best friends fight each other, but they do it for the money they get, which pays the bills.

“We will see.”

Itauma vs Dubois – a huge clash

Of course Warren holds the keys to all the next generation of British heavyweights including Itauma and Dubois.

Any clash is likely to be one of the biggest in the sport right now, and would generate huge commercial interest.

Itauma would likely be a favourite if he gets that far given his supreme talent and air of invicibility.

But former world champion Duke McKenzie believes Dubois could well be Itauma’s kryptonite.

He said on talkSPORT Boxing: “It’s just my opinion, but Daniel Dubois is all wrong for Moses Itauma right now.

“Dubois is where he needs to be; confidence-wise, fitness-wise, power-wise, because he has been there and he has done a number on some of the other top heavyweights in the division.

“He has got the experience on his side. He has beaten Hrgovic, Dubois, so I think that right now, stylistically, he is all wrong for Moses Itauma and also I will throw Kabayel into the mix – he is another that is tried, tested and proven at this level.

“Alright, he just got a vacant title, he got the belt handed to him but he is a champion nonetheless. I think that he is kryptonite for Moses Itauma right now. 

“I’m not saying that Moses isn’t an outstanding fighter, because he is. I’m not saying that he doesn’t win a world title, because I think he will.

“I just think that there are certain fighters that he doesn’t want to call out right now, because he still needs that experience to mix it with the elite fighters.”
