Florida Gators earn commitment from top-ranked IOL over Ohio State, Alabama

Five-star interior offensive lineman Maxwell Hiller announced his commitment to the Florida Gators on Wednesday. The Coatesville, Pennsylvania, native is renowned as the No. 1 interior offensive lineman in the country and is ranked as high as No. 4 overall nationally in the 2027 class, according to multiple recruiting services.

Hiller, who stands between 6-foot-5 and 6-foot-5½ and weighs approximately 300-305 pounds, chose Florida over a group of powerhouse programs that included Alabama, Ohio State, and Tennessee. He held additional offers from programs such as Georgia, Michigan, Notre Dame, Oklahoma, and Texas A&M

His commitment defines a breakthrough moment for head coach Jon Sumrall, as Hiller becomes the highest-ranked recruit to join the Gators since Sumrall took over the program. He is also Florida’s first five-star offensive lineman since Martez Ivey in 2015 and only the second top-10 overall offensive line recruit to commit to the Gators in the modern recruiting era, alongside DJ Humphries (2012).

Hiller’s decision was heavily influenced by offensive line coach Phil Trautwein, who previously recruited him while at Penn State and offered him his first FBS opportunity in May 2023. Florida extended an offer on Dec. 12, shortly after Trautwein joined the staff, and quickly became a serious contender. Hiller visited Gainesville several times, including for Junior Day on Jan. 24 and a spring practice and scrimmage in late March, where he built strong relationships with the coaching staff and players.

A multiyear starter at Coatesville High School, Hiller earned MaxPreps All-America second-team honors in 2024 and received an invitation to the 2026 Under Armour All-America Game. He also holds a ranking as the No. 7 overall prospect in ESPN’s SC Next Junior 300.

The Gators now have four commitments in their 2027 class and sit around No. 10 in early recruiting rankings. Hiller joins prospects such as four-star athlete Tramond Collins, four-star cornerback Amare Nugent, and three-star tight end Jackson Ballinger, giving Florida momentum under their new coaching staff.
