A few weeks ago, Rangers fans were dreaming of a glorious end to the Scottish Premiership season.

With Celtic and Heart of Midlothian playing each other on the final day, the hope at Ibrox was that Rangers would be able to win the title by winning their considerably easier fixture against Falkirk.

It was not an unrealistic prospect before the Scottish top flight underwent its customary split in April. At that point, Rangers were just a point shy of Hearts at the summit of the standings.

Fast forward a few weeks and the gap separating Danny Rohl’s men from top spot has ballooned to 11 points.

Rangers have been dismal since the division was divided, losing all four games and seeing their title hopes evaporate.

After defeats by Motherwell, Hearts and Celtic, Rangers were aiming to salvage some pride in the penultimate round of fixtures in midweek. Instead, they went down 2-1 at home to Hibernian.

Rohl, who had done an excellent job to get Rangers back into contention after Russell Martin’s ill-fated stint in the dugout, is consequently under pressure. 

Even if he gets a positive result this weekend, Rohl has lost the faith of many Rangers fans. Reports of a bust-up with the long-serving right-back James Tavernier have not helped his cause.

Perhaps that is unfair, however. Rangers have amassed 10 more points than any other team since Rohl took charge. Had the club appointed him instead of Martin last summer, the Gers might be champions already.

Ultimately, Rohl’s future is a question for another day. First up, Rangers will be looking to end a disappointing season on a high note.

Rangers to bounce back

The Rangers fans travelling to Falkirk on Saturday will do so out of a sense of duty rather than any particular enthusiasm for the game.

The Gers are on a rotten run and with a third-place finish already certain, the outcome of the game does not really matter.

Except, it does for Rohl. A victory on Saturday would not win over his doubters entirely, but it would at least end this four-game losing streak.

Falkirk have struggled since the split and they lost 6-3 at home to Rangers last month. Go for an away win in this one.

There have been goals aplenty in Rangers’ recent outings.

Their last seven matches in the Premiership have contained a total of 35 goals, meaning an average of five per game.

As you would expect from those numbers, there have been more shots and shots on target than average too. Indeed, there have been more than 10 attempts on target in four of Rangers’ last six fixtures. 

This is a free hit for Falkirk, who have nothing to lose. They will probably adopt an attacking approach, so both goalkeepers are likely to be kept busy.

Youssef Chermiti believes Rangers’ poor end to the campaign will give them “fire in our belly” for next term.

That remains to be seen, but from an individual standpoint Chermiti will be pleased with his efforts this season.

With 12 goals to his name, Chermiti has been outscored by only five players in the Premiership in 2025/26.

He has been inconsistent at times, but that is to be expected of a 21-year-old still adjusting to life in Scotland.
