Falcons make unsurprising Bijan Robinson contract move
While the Atlanta Falcons continue preparing for the 2026 NFL Draft, the front office decided to address Bijan Robinson’s contract. It’s a move that ensures Robinson remains with the franchise for at least the next two seasons.
Reports indicate that the Falcons are picking up the 24-year-old running back’s fifth-year option on his rookie deal, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter. This move gives the front office an extra year of extension talks with Robinson, if those negotiations take that long.
“Falcons picked up RB Bijan Robinson’s fifth-year contract option,” reported Schefter.
Only players selected in the first round of their respective drafts are eligible to have fifth-year options on their rookie contracts. This decision should buy the Falcons some time to further contract extension talks with Robinson. It is currently unknown when a possible extension could come to fruition for the former No. 8 overall pick.
With the fifth-year option picked up, Robinson is not due to become an unrestricted free agent until the 2028 offseason. He will remain as the go-to starter out of the backfield, while Brian Robinson is in line to be his immediate backup. The Falcons also have Tyler Goodson, Nathan Carter, and Carlos Washington Jr. in the running back room.
Bijan Robinson ended his third season in the NFL with 1,478 rushing yards (career-most) and 820 receiving yards (career-most) for a league-high 2,298 total yards of scrimmage. He also managed to record 11 total touchdowns, seven on the ground and four through the air.
While the Falcons continue to figure out the quarterback situation after signing Tua Tagovailoa to the roster, expectations are for Robinson to continue serving as a prime producer for the offense.
