Everton fans question board decisions with strong statement in response to transfer window

Everton fans are reeling following a disastrous transfer deadline day that has left manager David Moyes with just 18 senior outfield players.

Florian Balogun decided not to sign for the Toffees in the final hour after a deal sheet was submitted before the 11pm deadline.

Monaco had initially agreed to a £40million transfer to the Hill Dickinson Stadium, but an issue flagged during the striker’s medical prompted the Merseyside outfit to scramble for alternative targets.

The Everton hierarchy decided to reignite the deal for the USA international in the final hour of the deadline, but were hampered by a series of late complications.

Balogun’s withdrawal leaves the Premier League club in a difficult situation, possessing only one recognised striker in Thierno Barry after Beto joined Fiorentina on deadline day.

Wingers Brennan Johnson and Tyrique George are options for David Moyes to use in attacking areas, while 18-year-old academy prospect Braiden Graham represents another alternative.

Additionally, Jack Grealish returned to the club for a second spell but Everton allowed Iliman Ndiaye to join Manchester City in a £60million deal.

The club also replaced Seamus Coleman at right-back with Ainsley Maitland-Niles, while also selling Nathan Patterson to Torino.

Everton fans unite in anger

The Goodison faithful have seemingly reached boiling point over how the club is being managed under The Friedkin Group.

The official ‘Everton Fans Forum’—which meets regularly with board members to address supporter issues — released a statement targeted directly at the club’s executive leadership.

Additionally, prominent fan organisation The 1878s, who are dedicated to improving the matchday atmosphere through banners and tifos, announced they are ‘standing down for the foreseeable future’ following the recruitment window’s chaotic conclusion.

Moyes has previously thanked the groups efforts on several occasions and described their creations as incredible.

In a fiery statement, they said: “On Saturday Moyes said ‘I don’t think we can afford to lose any players, we need to stay as strong as we can’ – since then we have lost another five players (three of them who have left play in areas we needed to strengthen in) and only brought two in.

“To leave us with no back up full-backs and just one striker is full-on gross negligence, not forgetting we also lost one of our best players at an under valued price in today’s market in the process without replacing him too.

“We stated on Sunday that we do not feel that our fanbase’s ambitions and the club’s ambitions align right now – what happened yesterday has proved that even more.

“As a group we will still be standing down for the foreseeable future and will not be dedicating a huge amount of our own time to put together the displays that we do that try and generate the best pre match atmosphere possible.

“To be clear, this is nothing against the signings we have made, we welcome them to the club and wish them the best of luck here. However, like the rest of our fanbase, we are utterly disappointed and disgusted with how this transfer window has gone, especially the end of it.

“Also for fans asking, just to reiterate – when we design flags, there are rules and regulations that we have to adhere to regarding the wording on our flags during displays, we are not allowed derogatory or offensive wording or images.

“If we were able to get a load of flags in the ground to show our feelings of discontent, disappointment and anger over this whole situation, believe us, we would, but this is something that simply wouldn’t be allowed.

“Despite how we all feel we still urge fans to get behind our team on the pitch for 90 minutes like we did at Bournemouth on Saturday. We will fully support any action the fanbase takes in reaction to this extremely poor transfer window.”

The fan fallout comes despite CEO Angus Kinnear consistently maintaining throughout the summer that the primary objective of the window was to strengthen the squad — yet Everton enter September with a significantly weakened team.
