Cowboys fans won’t love Stephen Jones’ wide receiver budgeting comments

The Dallas Cowboys avoided a bad optics tornado at training camp for the first time in years. In fact, one might say the vibes are immaculate. Players voluntarily ran after practice, new defensive coordinator Christian Parker received rave reviews and star wide receiver George Pickens went about his business despite not getting a contract extension. Though, per the football gods, the NFL season cannot start until Cowboys management produces an unsettling soundbite.

Cowboys co-owner, chief operating officer and executive vice president of player personnel Stephen Jones unnecessarily spoke about the salary cap obstacles that the organization faces next offseason.

“I don’t know of any teams who can really pay two top receivers top of the market, so that’s gonna be a real difficult situation as we move forward,” he said, per the DLLS Cowboys X account. “We’ve managed to figure out how we can do it for this year. If everything works out the way we think it is, {where} CeeDee and George both have huge years again, then it’ll be a bigger challenge next year.

“George is really wanting to put back to back years on top of one another so it’ll help his market, and certainly, I know at some point {he’ll} want to be rewarded with a long-term contract.”

It is obviously difficult to comment on the dynamics between Pickens and the Cowboys shot-callers while looking from the outside, but implying that a player could be too expensive to retain seems a bit risky less than two weeks before opening kickoff. Dallas should keep Pickens content if it wants the best version of him when it matters most.

The Second-Team All-Pro should already be motivated to post another stellar campaign, but the Cowboys need him to channel that energy into the squad’s collective goal. George Pickens has expressed loyalty to The Star, to be clear. He is happy in Dallas and wants to help the franchise redeem its playoff shortcomings. A man’s mood can change, however, especially when one of the higher-ups uses the words “real difficult situation as we move forward.”

The Cowboys must be cohesive, and the best way to keep everyone united is to emphasize the present. Neither Stephen Jones nor Jerry Jones needs to discuss the future. There is plenty to keep them busy right now.
