Emmitt Smith’s son EJ announces he’s signing with Chiefs, not Cowboys

EJ Smith, son of Pro Football Hall of Fame running back Emmitt Smith, announced his decision to sign with the Kansas City Chiefs on Saturday after going undrafted in the 2026 NFL Draft.

Smith confirmed his decision on Instagram, following a pre-draft appearance at Dallas Day, the Dallas Cowboys’ local prospect workout event. Though Dallas seemed like the obvious destination given the hometown connection, he went off the beaten path and chose Kansas City instead.

The running back spent four seasons at Stanford before transferring to Texas A&M for his final two collegiate years. Across his college career, Smith recorded 207 carries for 969 rushing yards and nine touchdowns, along with 470 receiving yards and one receiving touchdown.

This past season with the Aggies, he finished with 44 carries for 205 yards and four rushing touchdowns, plus four receptions for 18 yards. In 2024, he rushed for 207 yards while operating in a limited role behind Le’Veon Moss and Rueben Owens.

With the Cardinal, Smith’s most productive stretch came in his first season as a starter, when he averaged 103 rushing yards per game and 31.5 receiving yards per game before a season-ending injury cut his year short after two games and led to a second redshirt season.

Over his Texas A&M tenure, he averaged 4.7 yards per carry and scored four touchdowns, continuing to contribute in a depth role.

The Chiefs, led by head coach Andy Reid, have cycled through multiple running backs since 2019 and recently added Super Bowl MVP Kenneth Walker III on a multiyear deal. The team also drafted Emmett Johnson and carries Emari Demercado and ShunDerrick Powell on the depth chart.

Smith now joins a crowded backfield with the goal of earning a spot on the final 53-man roster ahead of the 2026 season.
