EFL club announce departure of manager as he chooses to focus on other job

Blackburn Rovers have confirmed Michael O’Neill will not remain at the club next season as he’s decided not to extend his contract.

O’Neill took charge of the Championship club in February in a dual role alongside his position as Northern Ireland boss, but he will now focus solely on the latter role.

With Rovers battling relegation when he was appointed, the 56-year-old was tasked with keeping them afloat, while also preparing for a World Cup play-off match.

He was successful in his first aim, guiding Blackburn to a 20th-place league finish, five points above the drop zone.

In his 15 games in charge of Blackburn, O’Neill managed five wins, five draws and five defeats.

However, Northern Ireland were beaten by Italy in March, ending their hopes of reaching the 2026 World Cup in North America.

And O’Neill has now announced that his focus will remain solely with his national team, as he informed Blackburn fans that he will not be signing a contract extension to keep him at Ewood Park.

Revealing his decision, O’Neill said: “Blackburn Rovers is a historic football club with a proud tradition and passionate supporters.

“I have thoroughly enjoyed my time working with the players, staff and everyone around the club.

“After careful consideration, I have decided that my long-term focus must remain with Northern Ireland and the journey towards the European Championship campaign ahead.

“I would like to thank the owners, board, staff, players and supporters for the welcome and support shown to me during my time at the club.”
