Ed Orgeron, Lane Kiffin photo at LSU goes viral amid huge development

Lane Kiffin is about to begin his first season as the head coach at LSU. As part of that, he is working on building out his staff. Kiffin wanted to bring back an old friend and familiar face to the program.

Now, that familiar face has agreed to return, as Ed Orgeron will be joining the LSU staff as a special assistant to recruiting and defense.

Orgeron has a long history with LSU. He attended LSU temporarily in 1979, but left the program to return home. He then spent the remainder of his playing career at Northwestern State. Orgeron would return to LSU in 2015, being hired as the defensive line coach. In 2016, when Les Miles was fired, Orgeron was named the interim head coach.

Coach O finished that season 6-2, leading LSU to a Citrus Bowl win and a top-15 ranking. That led to LSU removing the interim tag. Orgeron would win a national championship with the team in 2019, and go 67-47 in his time at LSU before being fired following the 2021 season.

Orgeron and Kiffin also have a history together. They began working together when Kiffin joined the USC staff in 2001, and would stay as co-workers until Coach O got the head coach job at LSU heading into the 2005 season. They would team up again in 2009, when Kiffin was at Tennessee. When Kiffin left for USC, Orgeron followed him.

Orgeron would replace Kiffin on an interim basis when Kiffin was fired by USC in 2013, but did not get the full-time job, and left the program. Now the two will team up one more time, this time hoping to have a different ending than in 2013.
