Eagles’ Jalen Hurts completely shuts down contract extension question

Quarterback Jalen Hurts is entering the fourth season of his five-year, $255 million contract with the Philadelphia Eagles. Now is about the time he could start negotiating a possible extension with the franchise. However, when asked about it, Hurts diverted away from it by talking about what he’s focusing on this offseason.

Hurts, who is 27 years old, claimed he is focusing on being the best possible version of himself right now when asked about his contract situation, according to Zach Berman of The Athletic. From the sounds of it, the six-year veteran is doing what he can to learn the new offense under new offensive coordinator Sean Mannion.

“For me, I’m truly focused on being the best I can be right now,” said Hurts. “That’s where my energy is. There’s a lot of change, as is. I’m focused on this offense. I’m focused on building with [offensive coordinator] Sean [Mannion] and being at my best.”

The change Jalen Hurts references likely includes the absence of AJ Brown after the Eagles traded the star wide receiver to the New England Patriots. But learning a new offensive scheme, while learning and building chemistry with Mannion, likely makes his offseason a bit different compared to the others, too.

Perhaps the changes will bring some good to Philadelphia. The Eagles’ offense wasn’t nearly as efficient last season, and switching things up could bring new life to the team. Last season, the six-year veteran finished with 3,224 passing yards, 25 touchdowns, and a 64.8% completion percentage. He also totaled 421 rushing yards with eight more scores on the ground.
