Dylan Harper’s dad Ron calls out ‘3 officials falling asleep’ during Spurs’ Game 1 loss

The San Antonio Spurs coughed up a 14-point third-quarter lead during Wednesday’s 105-95 loss to the New York Knicks in Game 1 of the NBA Finals. Their late-game collapse wasted a historic rookie performance by Dylan Harper, who posted 16 points, eight rebounds and an assist on 6-of-10 shooting in 28 minutes. The 20-year-old became the youngest player in NBA history to score 10 points in a finals game, reaching the mark in the first quarter.

Harper’s father, Ron, who won five championships with the Chicago Bulls, called out the referees following the Spurs’ loss.

While Ron was displeased with the officiating, both teams were allowed to play with a high level of physicality throughout the game.

The Spurs attempted 25 free throws compared to the Knicks’ 18. Knicks star Jalen Brunson, who is often accused of embellishing foul calls, attempted only four free throws on the night.

Meanwhile, the charity stripe was Victor Wembanyama’s only safe haven. The Spurs superstar shot 12-of-13 from the line but converted just 6-of-21 field goal attempts en route to 26 points.

Ironically, the biggest factor in the Spurs’ loss may have been Harper’s lack of playing time down the stretch. Despite his high-level performance, Harper played just 3:33 during the fourth quarter. Johnson opted to roll with De’Aaron Fox down the stretch despite the veteran guard struggling early.

That proved to be a mistake. Fox went scoreless on 0-of-2 shooting with zero assists and two turnovers in the fourth quarter as the Spurs were outscored 29-19. Fox finished the game with seven points on 3-of-13 shooting from the field and 0-of-4 from three.
