Dodgers rumors: LA’s potential left field plan amid Teoscar Hernandez’s injury
The Los Angeles Dodgers will be placing Teoscar Hernandez on the IL after he suffered a left hamstring strain during the club’s 4-1 win over the Colorado Rockies on May 27. With Kiké Hernández already on the IL as well, L.A. is running thin with outfielders. On Friday, an MLB insider sparked rumors after naming two possible replacements for left field.
During the latest episode of “Dodgers Territory,” host Katie Woo of The Athletic claimed that Alex Call will likely get some looks in left field, while Ryan Ward could get some opportunities, too. Manager Dave Roberts may go with a platoon at left field and start whoever gives the team a better matchup against opposing pitchers.
“Ryan Ward is coming up from Triple-A, and he’ll platoon left field with Alex Call,” said Woo. “Dave Roberts said last night, well, he didn’t disclose Ryan Ward, it was pretty obvious because that was the only name that he mentioned that was possibly coming up. He did say that Alex Call will see more playing time out in left… We’ll see more from Alex Call… He’s done a nice job in his role.”

Call, who is 31 years old, has played as a rotational option for the Dodgers throughout this season. It’s a difficult situation for many players, as it’s hard to get a rhythm going without consistent playing time. But the five-year veteran has made the most of it, as he owns a .294 batting average and .413 OBP with 15 hits and 10 RBIs through 51 at-bats.
As for Ward, this is the second time he’s been called up by the Dodgers since making his MLB debut in L.A.’s 5-4 win over the San Diego Padres on April 19. Based on Woo’s reporting, Ryan Ward might be taking Alex Call’s rotational spot to help fill the void in the outfield.
Teoscar Hernandez’s injury timeline is up in the air for now, as the Dodgers must still determine the severity of the hamstring strain. The 11-year veteran goes to the IL with a .276 batting average and .348 OBP with 50 hits, seven home runs, and 31 RBIs this season.
