Dodgers manager Dave Roberts gives positive early Max Muncy writst update after Brewers exit
The Los Angeles Dodgers received encouraging early news on slugger Max Muncy after the veteran third baseman exited Friday’s 5-1 loss to the Milwaukee Brewers at American Family Field following a hit-by-pitch on his right wrist.
Muncy was struck by a 95.5 mph sinker from Brewers reliever Aaron Ashby in the eighth inning. The 35-year-old immediately crouched in pain near home plate before slowly making his way toward first base. Following a short exchange with manager Dave Roberts and the training staff near the first-base line, Muncy left the game during a pitching change, with Santiago Espinal entering as a pinch-runner and later remaining at third base.
Postgame X-rays on Muncy’s wrist came back negative, according to Roberts, though the slugger is still dealing with swelling and soreness. Muncy said he believed the pitch hit “half my wrist pad and half my wrist,” while also admitting the next few days would determine the severity of the injury. Roberts indicated Muncy is likely to miss the remainder of the three-game series in Milwaukee, with Espinal expected to start at third base and Miguel Rojas also potentially seeing additional infield time.
Back in 2019, Muncy fractured his right wrist after being hit by a pitch from Matt Strahm, an injury that didn’t appear on the initial X-ray, though he said this incident felt different.
Muncy has been Los Angeles’ most productive hitter this season. Entering Friday, he led the Dodgers with 12 home runs and owned a .258 batting average, .363 on-base percentage, .515 slugging percentage, .878 OPS, and a 147 wRC+. He also entered the night with 221 career home runs as a Dodger, trailing only Eric Karros (270) and Ron Cey (228) in franchise history since the team moved to Los Angeles.
Friday’s defeat also exposed the Dodgers offensive struggles without timely hitting. Los Angeles went 0-for-7 with runners in scoring position, stranded nine runners, and managed only one run despite loading the bases in the fourth inning. Shohei Ohtani drove in the only run with a sacrifice fly in the seventh, while Justin Wrobleski allowed five runs over five innings after the Brewers jumped ahead with a four-run first inning led by William Contreras’ three-run homer.
